That was a pretty interesting description of a "ballistic aileron roll" in this week's podcast. I especially liked the comment that "this 1G maneuver can be done in ANY airplane." I think I'll go out and try it tomorrow in my Piper Warrior.

NOT! Actually, it gave me the heebie-jeebies just thinking about it, notwithstanding the number of times I've seen the famous Bob Hoover movie on YouTube. I did enjoy learning the technique, though...so when I finally do go get some unusual attitude-aerobatic training, I'll be able to sound like I know something!

find someone in your area with something even mildly aerobatic. citabria and above. rolls are easy and fun!

How about in a 150?
Long ago a CFI tried to test my unusual attitude recovery on instruments out by taking the airplane and having me look down (not see the panel) until he handed the airplane back to me. While I wasn't watching the instruments, he did 7/8 of a 1G roll. Gave it back to me in a 45deg bank in the direction opposite what my ears would be telling me.
So do you believe your ears or the AI? I thought it was a darn good learning setup.
(I'm happy to say I trusted the AI :) )

you sure he did a roll? thats pretty crazy if he did. usually for unusual attitudes i just load up a couple g's then go to less than 1 g and apply the unusual attitude then. with that loading/unloading sequence the students equilibrium is usually so messed up they have no idea what is happening

Yeah, I'm sure.
After a few tries to mess me up, he did it while I was watching.
Then asked me not to tell the FBO owner because the 150 AI wasn't OK'd for aerobatic maneuvers. It followed the sky fine through the roll, though.

I don't think I'd show a student something (anything!) I didn't want the FBO owner to know - but he probably felt this was a slightly different situation because I was his CFI for a glider rating the same time he was my CFI for IFR. And if that seems strange, remember this was long ago - before IFR was required for CFI. :)

i dont think the problem was that the AI wasnt approved for aerobatics, it was that the AIRCRAFT wasnt approved for aerobatics.

do you expect me to believe that your instructor is as good of a pilot as Hoover was? give me a break. and you dont get to just go out and do those kind of aerobatic shows. it takes FAA approval.

Good Grief, no! Several leagues in between Hoover and all the rest of us put together! I was just thinking of an aircraft's capability, as a separate item from what it's certified for.
Back to "this 1G maneuver can be done in ANY airplane."
Tex Johnston even did it in the 707-80.
