Aviation Podcast #86
With so many seasoned pilots out there, any more tricks to share?

First off let me say that I really liked Jason's tip in the podcast. And lo and behold, when I re-looked at the yellow zulu pad that comes with the zulu kneeboards, there indeed is the column format for marking the left and right fuel times as you go. It's seems clear to me that Jason has had a strong influence in the ZuluWorks product line.

Speaking of which, I notice they aren't named as a sponsor of the podcasts anymore. I hope they're doing okay!

As to other tips, the only one I've used so far is extreme paranoia in not letting my tanks get below 2 hours of reserve. And to live by the mantra:

"The only time you can have too much fuel is when you're on fire!"

My first post here....just got an I pod for Christmas and am catching up on the episodes.

I wonder what the CFI's thought of representing the fuel usage more graphically in the columns. For example on a lined sheet of paper
having the L and R columns represent "appropriate" increments of
fuel. For example 10 or 15 minute increments per line. There there
is no addition to perform when you want to know what the situation is.

___L__Time__R___Time_
10_X__2:00__X___2:30_
20_X________X_______
30_X________X_______
40_X__3:20__X_______
50__________X_______

Whether your work load allows you to keep up on the Xing or not, the
time is there to help you. Lets say it is currently 3:30, I can
add an X to the left column or not, but at a glance I can easily
tell I have burnt 50 minuutes from the right tank and a quick
glance at the clock tells me I have burnt 40 from the left. I like
to keep up as these are usually xcountry legs.

This could be extra helpful if you start out without having
full tanks, say on a return leg from an airport w/o fuel.

I guess my point is they basically represent gas guages and
you can assess the situation without much math.

What do you think ?

/Jim
