Greetings:
I have been trying out different electronic logbooks over the years and as a mac user have been relatively dissapointed with the software available for electronic logbooks (regardless of operating system). I have, however, stumbled on a rather nice piece of software for the Mac called LogTen Pro. The new version 3.0 now released and I have been able to beta test the software since its been in development over the last several months. Its feature rich, and very extensive with customizing columns, reports and works well regardless if you are a Private Pilot, a CFI or an airline pilot. The neatest feature (imo) is that it now prints a report in the format of the Jeppesen Professional Logbook, green pages and all, so all you have to do is print the pages, sign them, and have your instructor sign them (if applicable) and viola, no more writing logs by hand and data entry in one place. Oh, and if you are a flight instructor, you can generate a report of all the endorsements given to a student!

Check it out: http://coradine.com/software/logten.html

Taildraggerflying,

There's an online logbook thats available for free. The website URL is http://logshare.com

It offers almost all of the same features, up to and including the generation of an 8710. Check it out, I've been using it for a while. The part that stinks is that I started using it at around 1000 hours total time, so I have had quite a helluva time updating it.

I agree, logshare.com was great for me for a while, but it lacked the flexibility i needed when I started training students and when I started flying turbine aircraft. For instance, I can log endorsements given for a particular student in LogTen Pro and instantly get a report of all endorsements given to a student. No more searching to see when a student's solo endorsment is going to expire.

I also suffered through several server outages at times and realized that for me its important that I have control over my data and what happens to it. So I would prefer to store my logbook database locally and use a backup solution at home.

I loved logshare during the time that I used it (about 3.5 years) but just found that it wasn't giving me what I needed as my needs changed. That is when I started searching for software for the Mac (since I dont have a PC).

Anyway, just wanted to get the word out to people. By the way, I think he gives discounts to both student pilots and flight instructors.

Cheers, Torea

I downloaded the Express version as a trial. The trial version will only allow you to log 10 flights. I liked it and was going to pay the $39 for a license only to find that it is not available...only the $89 pro version is available. Hm...I will probably go that route. Overall it looks like a good program.

I wrote a free log book software, but it's not specific to MAC's. It's written in Java and you should be able to just click and it downloads and installs automatically through a feature called webstart. Here is the link.
http://softlanding.sourceforge.net/install.html

I've been using it as it for reports and printing out my 8710 form. I think it has a lot of features that I needed, but probably not every bell and whistle you would have for pay software.

I'm using logshare. It probably doesn't have all the features that a CFI would need to track different students, etc. But I've corresponded with the guy who runs it, and he's very responsive. I bet if there's a specific need that can be specifically described, he'll make a change to accommodate it.

This is great! I have always been a Mac user, but never searched for any type of e-logbook for any platform. I'll give both LogShare and LogTenPro a try, although I don't know if I fly enough to make either of them that important. But I shall see.

One quick note for anyone trying to get to the LogShare website...you have to enter the "www" into the URL, e.g. http://www.logshare.com. I found that without the "www" you get to something having to do with Apache servers.

Thanks!

Good observation Moski!

I clicked on my link and you were right about it leading to an Apache server site. Upon closer investigation, this forum software added the period at the end of the sentence to the URL. I edited and now it leads you to the right place. Good catch!

I asked Noah if there was a deal for instructors but he said it is only free for students to Log their first 40 hrs. I have gone ahead and purchased LogTen and found it crucial for someone to manage their flight time. I wish I started out with an electronic flight log not only because I am on day 3 of entering my 1000 hrs but that I have found so many errors of how my training time was logged by my instructor. I dont know how to really handle it now I am an instructor and can't stand how my time was logged incorrectly. I dont know if I should correct it in my electronic log and correct my totals in my paper logbook or let the errors stand. Any suggestions? Most of my students do not plan to ever use their flight to time to get a job but after every lesson I tell them how I am logging their time and why, to make sure they agree and how to properly log flight time.

Blake:
I ran into this exact problem when first converting. I asked a lot of questions of people who converted to electronic and here is the general take on it.

You can make the correction in the paper and initial each entry and then just log it correctly electronically. Or you can add a line to your paper and one to your electronic noting that you are fixing previous errors. The remarks gets a bit large if you track the date in which the errors occured and there are a lot of them. Just think about it if you were to audit your own books, what would make the most logical sense.

I chose to sum it all up in several lines in my paper with detailed remarks. and the same in the electronic. It takes a while to audit like that. But heck its so worth it in the long run.

Cheers, Torea
