Does anyone know about flying with the Civil Air Patrol (CAP)? including personal experiences and what it may bring in terms of learning/experience opportunities?

Thanks TFP

I looked into the CAP a little when I first started lessons as possibly a way to gain more aviation exposure. But is seems that the CAP is actually the Air Force auxiliary corp. You have to "join", uniform and the whole thing. I was just hoping to help on search and rescues or in some other way to be around flying. Wasn’t really interested in joining up. Mike

For CAP can't you join as a member or an advisor? I visited once and saw that there are two different groups of people.

I joined CAP a year ago and have been flying my local squadron's C172 quite often for proficiency and flight time. My squadron has CFI's, former Air Force pilots, and many other interesting people to interact with on a regular basis. I have found that being in CAP gives a purpose to my flying that taking up friends and family for joyrides once a month didn't bring. It's not for everyone and does require a modest commitment. A good resource is www.gocivilairpatrol.com. Find a unit near you and contact the commander. He or she will be able to answer any of your questions.
