I did a quick look at what it takes to add on a glider rating and a local club has a 2 weekend course to do so. But they also have the commercial glider add on that I think requires an addition 10 solo flights. I now have an ASEL Commercial and was wondering what is the benefit of getting the commercial glider? Does it make more sense to do it as the initial or what is required to add it later if I discover I want or need it?

Ron,

there is not a lot of difference in the checkrides, perhaps a more stringent standard for precision landing.

with the commercial glider you can fly rides for compensation and go on to get CFI-G if you so choose.

You can get your private with 10 solo flights, then once you get 10 more solo flights and decide you want to, go for the commercial. or you can just do 20 solo flights right off the bat.

Thanks Tony, I was hoping you'd chime in. For 10 more solo flight it may be worth it to do the checkride as commercial vs PPL rather than take it again. I don't know the cost difference though but I'm in no rush. I was thinking of doing it this year. I'll report back if I go ahead and do it.
