in general some sort of training should be taken before doing formation flight. i used to do some formation flying with buddies, and usually buddies who were experienced in formation flight. we always had a ball. in fact, i can say that formation flying is definitely fun! Its really neat to see another airplane up close in flight. However, it doesnt take long for your margin to close up. There was an accident recently in Alabama (I think) with a CJ-6 and an RV. That one really made me stop and think about what I was doing. Now I really want to go get some good formation training before I do any more of it.
