I know a few who have taken this path, and it seems that it can go either way. the trick is that you have to take the training somewhat into your own hands. the downside IMO to the fast track schools is that the entire curriculum is "canned" so to speak. every flight is planned out and there is not a lot of wiggle room for fun, recreational flying. every flight has a specific purpose towards the next certificate or rating, and sometimes that can prevent you from getting good experience (i.e. going out and making mistakes) that will make you a well rounded pilot.
Then of course there is the whole significant debt thing and barely making enough money afterwards to pay rent and groceries, let alone pay back loans. But it sounds like you understand that so ill let you worry about it
