I'm considering going to one of the many flight schools that offer accelerated training, such as ATP or Ari-Ben. I have my PPL and will be going with the goal of obtaining an instrument rating through multi-comercial with the possibility of CFII.

Commiting to doing this is a big step. It's extremely expensive, around 50,000, and I know in the early years professional pilots are paid very poorly. So, before taking this step I'm trying to get as much advice as possible about these fast-track schools. Have any of you flown with a pilot who went to such a program, or have any other first hand information about the topic?

I know a few who have taken this path, and it seems that it can go either way. the trick is that you have to take the training somewhat into your own hands. the downside IMO to the fast track schools is that the entire curriculum is "canned" so to speak. every flight is planned out and there is not a lot of wiggle room for fun, recreational flying. every flight has a specific purpose towards the next certificate or rating, and sometimes that can prevent you from getting good experience (i.e. going out and making mistakes) that will make you a well rounded pilot.

Then of course there is the whole significant debt thing and barely making enough money afterwards to pay rent and groceries, let alone pay back loans. But it sounds like you understand that so ill let you worry about it :)

good lluck with whatever choice you make. keep us updated!
