listening to tower (or appoach) communications is a great way to brush up on your radio skills no matter what level you are at. If you don't have a scanner (air band radio) to listen to don't forget about http://www.liveatc.net/ which is a great way to listen to a number of different ATC locations. If your airport is not in there - you can always host a connection.

I work near my local airport, close enough I can see traffic after it gets airborn depending on the pattern that day. I listen to the local ATC all day long.

Listening to ATC was extremeley helpful to me too as a student. I was working line service at the time and sitting in the fuel truck most of the day ... listening to the ground control and tower control was a great way to pick up on the communications. And now we've got liveatc.net ... it's a beautiful thing.
