I thought this might be an appropriate topic, since it's likely that there is a high percentage of ZuluUsers on this forum. In fact, I found TheFinerPoints recently through the ZuluWorks page while looking for a kneeboard.

Before I (finally) get to my question, I want to really thank Jason for his Intro and Outro songs, which are now burned into my brain after listening to the first 29 podcasts in one week!

So, the question: I bought the standard ZuluBoard, and have the two pads that go with it - the 3-in-1 Flight Pad and the Foldover NavLog. But, since the Flight Pad has a vertical orientation, and the NavLog has a horizontal (landscape) orientation, I'm just not sure how one would use them together, without having to constantly re-orient the clipboard. Maybe it's me, but I'd like to hear from someone who's been using them about how you do it.

Thanks! I must admit that I use a 'highly modified' Zuluboard

- I use the standard board turned sideways with a Breeze Cheater on the end to hold my pens and stuff. I should upload a photo of it ... now that I think of it ... anyway ... one of the best things about Rob's products is that you can tailor them to suit your needs.

I would recommend getting another standard board (just the board) for your nav logs and use the knee board for ATIS and other inflight info. Try using a Breeze Cheater over one end for pencils and other items.

The Chart Boards won me over on our recent trip to Sun N Fun. They hold charts in a really clean way and are easily stowed when not in use. They eliminate having to contantly open and then refold your chart.

So to me the perfect Zulu-setup is -

A mini - Z for inflight info etc, and then a plain board over my lap with a breeze cheater on it ... for route logs etc, and a chartboard with my charts open and folded to the right spot ... clipped down on both ends. For longer trips as many as three chartboards will come in handy.

Thanks for the great response. I already had a standard Zuluboard and Chartboard, but I ordered the extra deluxe clipboard (with the storage space).

I used the setup on my long solo cross country, and it worked great. Chartboard on my left leg, Z-board on my right with the 3in1 pad sheets for each leg of the trip, and my deluxe clipboard loose, with the navlog sheets. It really worked great, and having the storage space in the clipboard gave me some room for blank pad sheets and to store my completed logs.

My instructor's getting jealous of my gear!

I'm a student, just getting into my cross-countries, and am struggling with how to organize all the paper. Any photos of your setups would be VERY helpful, as I'm having trouble envisioning what you're describing.

Looking around the gallery, I didn't find a picture of Jason's setup. Can you point out the location?

I fly frequently with Jason and I have to say his system is a little antiquated. He usually shows up for flights with a large stone tablet and a chisel. At the end of heavy IFR flights there's marble dust all over the plane. It gets to be a bit much. It gets into all the little seams and edges of the G1000 and it drives me crazy. I keep telling him, "Jason, I'll give you a Zuluboard... for FREE!" But he insists that he's just comfortable with his own method.

Originally he wanted to go into business selling these stone tablets to other pilots. I disuaded him from persuing that venture and convinced him that podcasting and making videos was the way to go.

I did wise up though ... and am now podcasting and making videos.

BUT I still feel that stone tablet animation offers a clarity and warmth that is unmatched my digital media and I am pushing hard for the animations on all of the new videos to be chisled from stone.

call me old fashioned ...

I imagine the stone tablets cause quite a bit of havoc with W&B issues... you have to calculate stone dust distribution along with fuel burn. Geez... that's a lot of workload. And the more reroutes you get... the more stone dust gets moved around. Jason, you ... are ... amazing. But, perhaps a bit old-school.

I've been borrowing a Mini-Z from a friend who's laid up for a while to see how I like it before I go buy my own, and I have to say that I LOVE it! It works perfectly to hold all of my pens/pencils and have a scratch pad right there. I'll be getting one whenever my friend recovers from his surgery and demands his back... . (The only thing is that I wish the leg strap was a bit longer... I have to wear it pretty high on my thigh so it won't interfere with the yoke in the 172.

yea i really need to get me one of these mini-z's. i managed to lose my kneeboard on my trip to memphis in a cessna 140 last winter. it was a big bulky thing anyway. flying with Kent Shook, he enlightened me to the magic of the mini-z. would be perfect for when im flying the glider as well. if i make it up to Oshkosh maybe ill have to pick one up

yes you are right, I will make it. even if I have to walk. too many people are going to be there that I wont have another opportunity to see until next year (like you and Jason)

thanks! although i find it unlikely to pick up a ride that late in the week from the west coast. most of the folks out there will be more likely to headed home instead of to oshkosh.

if i dont fly in it wont be too big of a travesty. its a pretty straightforward drive up there, ive done it before.
