Remember that IFR clearance is different than tower clearance in that...approach/center, the controlling ATC facility, will give you clearance to your destination, and tower gives you clearance to land. If there is not a operating control tower, than you will be responsible to transmit your intentions on the CTAF.

So for arrivals...

In either situation, when you are within the vicinity of the airprot, ATC will either hand you off the tower control or give you permission to change frequencies.

In the non-towered environment, you would then broadcast your intentions, giving who you are, your position and altitude, and intention. Remember that the pilots that you are transmitting to are very possibly VFR so phrase appropriately.

For departure...

You will have to call for a clearance via the local FSS, or if there is a frequency that can be reached on the ground, they will give you the "clearance void time" which you will have to depart and contact ATC within. If you cannot, you must call them back and advise within 30 minutes. Often it will be a short time, so it is best to ready when you call. As soon as you are able, contact ATC and resume the flight as if you had departed from a towered controlled airport.

Hope that helps,
a

i learned to fly in an area where there was no radar below about 3000 AGL. to the south of us there was no radar up to 7000 AGL! Nearest control tower was 88 miles away. You call on the phone like anais said. it works pretty well. Cell phone adapters for your headset have made it a lot easier as you can call them when you are in the airplane ready to go instead of making a mad dash from the FBO to the airplane, run up and blast off.

Cool thanks for the time for your responses, but I was talking about IFR clearence, you do file and IFR byt phone or radio to the nearest FSS but thats only to file your IFR (In this care) but you dont get your clearence there, which then comes my question,,

no, in the event that you are not at a controlled field or at an airport with an RCO on the ground, you must call flight service, who will relay to the nearest approach or center, to get your clearance. I suppose if you magically got ahold of the nearest approach or centers phone number you could call them directly

Cooll thanks, for thaking the time to reply,, so you call FSS to file your IFR flight plan, and then once you do the preflight then you call them again to get your clearence right? and if the airport has a control tower (part time, class D), then you get your cleearence by ground right?
thanks in advance

yea thats pretty much it. or if the airport has a remot communication soutlet (RCO) then you can use that to contact the local clearance deliverers over the radio. have fun!
