I am a newly christened private pilot and I'd like to jump right into my instrument rating. I'd like to get either the Sporty's or King Schools DVD's to supplement my training. Anybody have any experience or reccommendations regarding these DVD's?

see if you can borrow a sample of each from someone else and see which fits your style better. Personally, John and Martha put me right to sleep, but for many they have taught oodles of stuff. Both are equal, IMO, for the material covered, its all about personal preference.

I would have to agree with Tony, very personal choice. Both have different personalities and there might be one that you prefer.

Although not step by step courses, there are many supplements available online and published. If you have an instructor that is thorough and provides direction, you may be comfortable with the text you have and what you can find online. The FAR/AIM is tremendous for information as are the intro pages in the Jeppesen Charts. Read both of those and you'll be leagues ahead. The problem is the context of the information and that's where you would rely on your instrucfor. Jason has a couple of IFR workshops online with more to come at www.ontheflightline.com (as well as some great communication videos), Aopa at http://www.aopa.org/ covers many topics. IFR Refresher is great - published monthly (I think) and provides lots of info.

I think that the courses are helpful but if you are motivated, you can find a lot of information out there. You should definitely have Instrument Flying by Peter Dogan...lots of good real life stuff.

Let us know what you find.
a :D

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. Sporty's actually has the first lesson available free of charge, so I'll check it out. Thanks again for your help.

I'm a little late chiming in on this but I used the Sporty's DVD series last year to get my IFR and I thought it was very good. It doesn't feed things to you on a silver platter, though. You have to watch the videos and use the test prep software in conjunction with each other, and I found that going through all the material twice helped drill it in.

Related question... Does anybody have any experience ASA's Virtual Test Prep DVD's? They're a lot less expensive than either King or Sporty's, and the coupon code Jason gives out saves you an addional 20%.
