I am a low time private pilot ASEL. I got my ticket last fall and then moved to the NYC area. I have not gotten much flying in during the last 6 months. I would like to pursue and instrument rating but I don't have the funds right now to get in done in a short amount of time. I recently got the idea of going after a glider rating as an affordable alternative to powered flying. Does anyone have any input as to whether or not this is a good idea? Based on a quick search of the NTSB website there seems to be relatively few fatal accidents involving gliders. Is that in fact the case?
Thanks in advance,
Adam

I did a half a dozen lessons in gliders years ago and would like to add it on too. From what I have heard it will improve your flying and use of rudder. The soaring techniques and assoc skills can help mountain flying too I would think.

learning how to soar will certainly expand your airman abilities. for me soaring provides the challenge I need to stay excited about personal recreational flying. always trying to go higher, faster, and farther. I would highly recommend you go for it. check out www.ssa.org that is the website for the Soaring Society of America. They have an application called "Where to Fly" and there you can find the closest soaring site to you.

The last weekend in June through July 4 is the International Vintage Sailplane Meet in Elmira, NY. It will be a great time, the reunion of the old time gliders with a full week of flying and fun planned. I'll be there opening weekend.
